This Community Projects course is offered to students from any discipline at ECU (Emily Carr University of Art and Design). The focus for this course is exhibition designs-installations and exploration of Chinatown’s community; its past, present and future. Students researched Chinatown to develop themes for their proposed exhibition. Their project-assignments included a Powerpoint presentations, preparations of exhibition models, a palette of materials and a website documenting this course will be accessible to all.

The second floor gallery of the Chinese Cultural Centre in Vancouver’s Chinatown is the exhibition space students used for their exhibition proposals.Students learned about forthcoming exhibitions being prepared for the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad in Zodiac Square, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Gardens and 2nd Floor Gallery at the Chinese Cultural Centre.

Students made visits to Chinatown and engaged young artists at Vancouver’s Arts Umbrella to create Asian Zodiac Creatures to be included in the  Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad: “Spirit of Place Beijing, Vancouver, London Olympic Themes Exhibitions and events from Feb. 11th to Feb. 21st. 

Research for student exhibition designs involved a diverse range of community organizations including: Canadian Society for Asian Arts, Chinese Cultural Centre, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, Arts Umbrella.
